Review: Suede - The Best Of [2CD] (2010)
Suede is one of the most influential and acclaimed bands of the Britpop era, known for their distinctive blend of glam rock, indie pop and alternative rock. Led by charismatic singer Brett Anderson and featuring talented guitarist Bernard Butler, who later became a successful producer, Suede created some of the most memorable songs of the 1990s and early 2000s.
The Best Of is a comprehensive collection of Suede's career highlights, spanning two discs and featuring a mix of singles, album tracks and B-sides. The first disc includes all of their hits, such as \"Animal Nitrate\", \"Beautiful Ones\", \"Trash\", \"Filmstar\", \"Metal Mickey\", \"The Wild Ones\" and \"She's In Fashion\". The second disc showcases some of their deeper cuts and fan favourites, such as \"Pantomime Horse\", \"My Insatiable One\", \"Killing Of A Flash Boy\", \"This Hollywood Life\" and \"The Asphalt World\". All of the tracks have been remastered by Anderson and Butler with Chris Potter, giving them a fresh and vibrant sound.
The Best Of is a must-have for any Suede fan or anyone who appreciates quality British music. It is a testament to Suede's lasting legacy and influence on modern rock. Suede's origins can be traced back to 1989, when Brett Anderson and Mat Osman, who had been friends since school, placed an advertisement for a \"non-muso\" guitarist in NME. Bernard Butler responded, and the trio began writing songs together, using a drum machine for rhythm. Anderson's girlfriend Justine Frischmann joined as a second guitarist, and the band adopted the name Suede after Morrissey's song \"Suedehead\". Suede soon gained attention from the music press and radio with their demo tape Specially Suede, which featured songs like \"Wonderful Sometimes\" and \"The Drowners\".
In 1991, Suede recruited drummer Simon Gilbert and signed a record deal with Nude Records, an independent label run by Saul Galpern. The band's first single, \"The Drowners\", was released in May 1992 and received critical acclaim for its distinctive blend of glam rock and post-punk influences. The song reached number 49 on the UK Singles Chart and was followed by two more top 20 hits, \"Metal Mickey\" and \"Animal Nitrate\". Suede's debut album, simply titled Suede, was released in March 1993 and became the fastest-selling debut album in almost ten years. It topped the UK Albums Chart and won the Mercury Music Prize, beating albums by U2, PJ Harvey and The Prodigy.
Suede were hailed as \"The Best New Band in Britain\" by Melody Maker and became one of the leading figures of the emerging Britpop movement, along with Blur, Oasis and Pulp. However, Suede soon distanced themselves from the label and the scene, preferring to explore darker and more ambitious themes on their second album, Dog Man Star. The recording sessions for the album were fraught with tension between Anderson and Butler, who had different musical visions and personal issues. Butler left the band in August 1994, before the album was completed. Dog Man Star was released in October 1994 and received mixed reviews from critics and fans. It was a commercial disappointment compared to their debut, but it has since been regarded as one of their best and most influential works. a474f39169
